How to Get an Adult Driver’s License in Texas

Getting a driver’s license is a necessity for most adults, if they have not already. In Texas, there are specific steps that must be taken to obtain an adult drivers license. Before an adult can get their driver’s license they must first get their learner permit, which requires passing a knowledge test and meeting certain eligibility requirements. After successfully completing the learner permit process, the adult can then move on to the driver’s license. In this blog post, we will discuss the steps needed to get an adult driver’s license in Texas.

Complete 6 Hours of Class

Before getting a Texas Teen Learner’s License, adults 18-24 MUST complete a 6 hour course, face to face or online. It is recommended that ALL adults go through this course prior to taking the permit test but only young adults are required by law to do so. After the completion of this class, the student will take the Permit Test. By completing this class, adults will have all the information needed to move on to the next step in obtaining their Permit and License.

Obtain a Learner's Permit

Getting a Learner's Permit is the first step in becoming a licensed driver in Texas. The process begins with taking an approved 6 hour Driver Education Course. Central Texas Driving School offers this course in both English and Spanish! Once you complete the 6 hours class and take the handbook test, you will receive your Certificate of Completion (ADE 1317). You'll need this to schedule an appointment for your permit at your local Department of Public Safety.

Your appointment will consist of you having your paperwork processed and your picture taken. To do so, you'll need to provide documents such as a birth certificate, social security card, two proofs of residency, and your ADE 1317 from your course provider.

Once you pass the test and obtain your permit, you are eligible to get behind the wheel of the car!

Complete Your Driving Practice

Once you have obtained your Learner's License, you will need to get behind the wheel with a licensed driver who is over the age of 21 and PRACTICE. The State of Texas does not require specific curriculum to be covered for adults but XLR8 Drivers Education does offer curriculum for adults! During this practice time, adults should be mindful of the rules of the road, learn to control the vehicle, parallel park, stop at stop signs, etc. Private lessons can also be purchased at your local driving school to help adults master their driving skills. Central Texas Driving School in Waco tailor-fits instruction for every student! Be sure to watch the IMPACT Texas Video before taking the Drive Test as it is required by the state. With the proper preparation and dedication, you will be well on your way to earning your drivers license in Texas!

Schedule and Take the Driving Test

The final step to obtaining your Adult Driver's License in Texas is to take the drive test. The drive test is administered by either a Third Party Skills Test Provider or Department of Public Safety. Central Texas Driving School is one such test provider, so you can make an appointment with them to take the test. Once you have completed the drive test, DPS must process the paperwork.

When you arrive at your appointment, you must bring your permit, and IMPACT certificate. After you have completed the Drive Test successfully, the DPS will process your paperwork and you will receive your Driver's License. Congratulations!
