How to Get Your Teen Drivers License in Texas

Getting a driver’s license is a milestone for most teens. In Texas, there are specific steps that must be taken to obtain a teen drivers license. Before a teen can get their driver’s license they must first get their learner permit, which requires passing a knowledge test and meeting certain eligibility requirements. After successfully completing the learner permit process, the teen can then move on to the driver’s license. In this blog post, we will discuss the steps needed to get a teen driver’s license in Texas.

Complete 6 Hours of Class

Before getting a Texas Teen Learner’s License, it’s important to enroll in a Parent Taught Program and complete the first 6 hours of class. After the completion of this curriculum, the student can take the Permit Test. By completing this module, teens will have all the information needed to move on to the next step in obtaining their Teen Driver’s License. XLR8 Driving School is an approved Parent Taught Program in Texas, and offers an online course that satisfies the driver education requirements for teens.

Obtain a Learner's Permit

Getting a Learner's Permit is the first step in becoming a licensed driver in Texas. The process begins with taking an approved Driver Education Course. With the introduction of XLR8 Drivers Education, you can now take the course online or through the app. Once you complete the first 6 hours and handbook test, you will receive your Certificate of Completion (DE 964). You'll need this to schedule an appointment for your permit at your local Department of Public Safety.

Your appointment will consist of you having your paperwork processed and your picture taken. To do so, you'll need to provide documents such as a birth certificate, social security card, verification of enrollment, two proofs of residency, and your DE 964 from XLR8 Drivers Education.

Once you pass the test and obtain your permit, you are eligible to move on to complete the classroom hours and your required 44 hours of driving practice!

Complete the Required Hours of Driving Practice

Once you have obtained your Learner's License, you will need to complete the required hours of driving practice in order to become eligible for a Texas drivers license. According to the Learner's License, 14 hours of direct parent instruction are required and 30 hours of additional driving practice with 10 of those hours being after dark. An approved parent must provide instruction for the 14 hours of curriculum provided by XLR8 Drivers Education. The remaining 30 hours can be completed with a licensed driver who is over 21 years old. This is known as Behind the Wheel training and can be done through a certified driving school or with the parent or guardian.

Once a teen is at least 16 years old, they have had their permit for a minimum of 6 months and they have completed of these required hours of driving practice and classroom hours, they will be ready to take the Drive Test. Be sure to watch the IMPACT Texas Video before taking the Drive Test as it is required by the state. With the proper preparation and dedication, you will be well on your way to earning your teen drivers license in Texas!

Schedule and Take the Driving Test

The final step to obtaining your Teen Driver's License in Texas is to take the drive test. The drive test is administered by either a Third Party Skills Test Provider or Department of Public Safety. Central Texas Driving School is one such test provider, so you can make an appointment with them to take the test. Once you have completed the drive test, DPS must process the paperwork.

When you arrive at your appointment, you must bring your permit, final DE 964 certificate from Parent Taught, Online Drivers Ed, or traditional driving school, a new Verification of Enrollment, IMPACT certificate, and your 30 hour log sheet from behind the wheel training. After you have completed the Drive Test successfully, the DPS will process your paperwork and you will receive your Teen Driver's License. Congratulations!
